Scripture: Psalm 8 (NIV)
LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
“Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter.” Yoda says this to Luke as he tries to explain the connection of the Force to every part of creation. In Yoda’s mind, everyone was more than the sum of their parts because they were connected to a power teeming with life.
The Psalmist expresses a similar sentiment in today’s reading. “You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned in glory.” Even though people seem fairly insignificant when compared to large planets or amazing vistas or even the detail and wonder of the smallest atom, God didn’t come to Earth to improve those aspects of creation. He didn’t come to save animals, He didn’t come to create something new, He came to save us–lowly, flawed, dirty humans–so that He could live forever with us.
How astounding is that? When the God of all creation takes such efforts to have a lasting relationship with you, that’s bestows honor upon you, the highest honor you can ever receive. The old saying goes that “I know I’m special because God don’t make no junk.” It’s absolutely true! God has infused us with a spirit that is modeled after His. The body will pass away, return to the ashes that it came from, but that spirit, that luminous part of us, can live forever with Him. You are special, you are amazing, because God said so!
