Scripture: Psalm 146:5-10 (NIV)
Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD their God. He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them— he remains faithful forever. He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets prisoners free, the LORD gives sight to the blind, the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down, the LORD loves the righteous. The LORD watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked. The LORD reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the LORD.
Soon after we started doing these devotionals a couple of years ago, we talked about how there isn’t much of a reference to a divine being in Star Wars. To spin off of that, I wanted to talk a little bit today about our favorite protocol droid and his seeming faith in the divine.
C-3PO at least knows about various religions in the galaxy, as he says in Return of the Jedi that it is “against his programming to impersonate a deity”. I’m sure there are many of those out there, with as many different races and species that we see on screen. The fact that he knows he isn’t a god or any sort of divine personage is a great thing to see. So often, we tend to think that we are the master of our own stories, the only thing that matters. 3PO, at least, realizes his place in the cosmic order of things.
He also knows that he was created. He thanks the Maker (and, ironically, in the presence of the Maker’s son) even though, due to his memory wipes, he doesn’t actually know who constructed him. We know that Anakin Skywalker put him together, though there is speculation that Anakin did more re-assembling than actual creating, that maybe there was someone else farther back that constructed the droid originally. No matter that he doesn’t know who specifically made him and has never (to his knowledge) seen them, he still will give them praise at certain points in his life.
Like the Psalmist, we have never seen the Lord in person, but we know that He is there. We know that He created us and has put us on this earth for a reason, even if we’re not sure what it is. We know that all we have comes from Him and His creation is glorious. God doesn’t make no junk, as the saying goes. Our first thoughts each day should be praise for another morning. He is wonderful and glorious. Thank the Maker!
